Abstract
As the most abundantly available and renewable biopolymer on the Earth, lignocellulose (lignocellulosic biomass), which is mainly composed of polysaccharides including cellulose and hemicelluloses as well as lignin, has been widely used to prepare sustainable functional materials. Recently, our group has developed lots of sustainable materials and/or devices, based on cellulose and/or lignin, for diverse advanced applications, such as food packaging, energy harvesting/storage, and sensing. For instance, a high-barrier, strong, and antibacterial packaging paper was fabricated by coating the acetylated cellulose solution with cinnamaldehyde. Nanocellulose-based transparent film and composite aerogel were applied in light management and pressure sensing, respectively. In summary, the sustainable functional materials based on renewable biopolymers, especially cellulose and lignin, exhibited excellent properties and great potential as promising alternative to petroleum-based resources. In future, lignocellulosic biomass would be the leading materials towards the sustainable development of the world.
